History

The Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF) was established by the First Lady of Zanzibar, H.E. Mariam Mwinyi, driven by a deep-seated desire to see a more equitable and prosperous Zanzibar. Having witnessed the unique challenges faced by women in the blue economy and the silent struggles of girls lacking basic health education, Her Excellency envisioned an institution that would move beyond charity toward systemic empowerment.

From Compassion to Strategy

While ZMBF began with the Founder's passion, it has evolved into a strategic, evidence-based institution. Her Excellency’s desire for change is reflected in our rigorous approach to social development. We don't just identify problems; we implement sustainable solutions—from the motorized boats that protect our seaweed farmers to the local manufacturing of menstrual kits that keep our daughters in school.

The "Maisha Bora" Philosophy

Under the First Lady’s guidance, the Foundation operates on the principle of Maisha Bora (A Better Life). This isn't just a name; it is a promise. It represents:

Economic Security: Empowering the 80% of seaweed farmers who are women to move from subsistence to profit.

Health & Dignity: Breaking the stigma of menstrual health for 7,000+ girls and counting.

Safety & Justice: Standing as a shield for the 1 in 7 women facing violence, ensuring they have a path to recovery and justice.
